The Viola da Gamba Dojo of New York
John Mark Rozendaal, Director
2011 - 2012
Music of William Byrd will be a focus for the Dojo in this season.
Weekly Meetings
The New York Viola da Gamba Dojo meets weekly on Saturdays, 10:30am - 12:15 pm at the home of Martha Bixler on Manhattan's upper west side.
A fee of $20 per session is charged.
Class Description
Each week we begin the class with some technique exercises
- some stretches, tonalizations, rhythms, trills, scales,
whatever seems valuable for the moment. We then rehearse
basic repertoire - beautiful, simple songs and dance tunes. This
simple (not easy!) material gives us a chance to really refine
our sound and hone our skills of playing expressively and
with good ensemble. We end the class with exploring more
ambitious repertoire. Sometimes we hear performances of "works
in progress," solos or ensemble pieces that class members
are studying in lessons or preparing for performance. The class works
best when attendees can come very regularly, but visitors
are welcome.
If you are interested in participating, please send me an
e-mail at jmrozendaal@yahoo.com, or call me at (914) 806-7407.
