The Viola da Gamba Dojo of New York
John Mark Rozendaal, Director
Weekly Meetings
The New York Viola da Gamba Dojo meets weekly on Saturdays, 10:30am - 12:15 pm at the home of Martha Bixler on Manhattan's upper west side.
A fee of $20 per session is charged.
Play-In, May 22, 2010
The Viola da Gamba Dojo of New York's Spring Play-In will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2010 from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Our Saviour's Atonement Lutheran Church, 178 Bennett Street, New York. The event will feature French repertoire, medieval, renaissance, and baroque.
Class Description
Each week we begin the class with some technique exercises
- some stretches, tonalizations, rhythms, trills, scales,
whatever seems valuable for the moment. We then rehearse
basic repertoire - beautiful, simple songs and dance tunes. This
simple (not easy!) material gives us a chance to really refine
our sound and hone our skills of playing expressively and
with good ensemble. We end the class with exploring more
ambitious repertoire. Sometimes we hear performances of "works
in progress," solos or ensemble pieces that class members
are studying in lessons or preparing for performance. The class works
best when attendees can come very regularly, but visitors
are welcome.
